How do you want the future of the CLU to look?

A Mack truck is closing in on you quickly and you can now count the number of bugs on the grill.

Here’s the question you have a split-second to ask yourself: Is it too soon to get out of the way, or should I stand fast?

Now let’s freeze that Mack truck for a moment.

Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, offers the following insight: “Don’t engage the research if you are not prepared to go where it leads.

The CLU Institute has a Mack truck closing in on the CLU designation. The marketing research we’ve conducted within Advocis’ demographic data tells us that—as of June 2008—there were 761 members who are eligible to register for CLU program courses.

Now some will argue “That is not possible?” (They may be some of the same folks who may argue that the earth is flat).

As we all know, Advocis membership is a necessary condition for obtaining and maintaining the CLU designation.

When Advocis membership was a condition of employment in the agency system, there was no membership problem. But Advocis has not had a similar source of membership growth for the last decade. Within Advocis the number of CLU members and CLU designees holding the CLU has remained strong, constant and consistent.

The average age of the CLU designate is 61. This means no new market opportunities have emerged, which leaves the current market niche disabled, retired, successioned or dying.

What does this mean? Well, there is a possibility of 10 or so years of life left in the CLU brand. But there also exists the possibility that the brand as we know could eventually be vapourized.

What if the Institute could market the CLU designation to non-members of Advocis?

Doing so would require changing the pricing, licensing and membership rules—to name just a few of the speed bumps.

Right now in this country there are some 14,500 CFP designates who are not members of Advocis. This represents a lucrative niche market that would immediately be eligible for the CLU Designation.

That’s why, throughout 2009, the CLU Institute will conduct research which will include analysis, price modeling, legal requirements and further investigate the members/non-member issue.

This is your blog. The CLU Institute would love to hear your thoughts, pros and cons.

Ask yourself this: How do you want the future of the CLU to unfold? What should it stand for?

That Mack truck is bearing down on us.

I welcome your feedback.

Gravatar It's a good idea, but the thing we have to determine is: can we do it? some members won't want the CLU to lose its Advocis exclusivity, and complain that they joined Advocis only because of the CLU membership requirement, so it's not fair that newcomers get a choice.

Gravatar the more the merrier I say. There is clearly a demographic demand for the skills and knowledge of a CLU. If a barrier to entry is the additional cost of Advocis dues, then revamp the fee structure to attract those CFP's (and others) who see the value of the CLU designation.

Gravatar I couldn't agree more with opening the CLU designation to non-Advocis members. I am one of those who joined Advocis simply because it was necessary to obtain the CLU. I believe the Advocis barrier is significant. Apart from the cost of Advocis membership, I believe the Advocis barrier diminishes the value of the CLU brand, since the designation does not "stand on its own" like a CFP or a CA or most any other professional designation. I am 44 and think the CLU designation is very valuable along side my CA, CFP and TEP. Yet I resent the required association with Advocis to carry the CLU. I find that requirement to be contrary to what a professional designation is supposed to stand for. If Advocis wants my membership, then Advocis should show me the value of being a member, and not use the CLU carrot to bribe me into paying Advocis dues, thereby undermining the value of the CLU itself. I encourage the CLU to "break away" and open this brand of expertise to professionals outside the Advocis house.

Gravatar Wayne's post pretty much sums up my feelings.
I am not really eager in obtaining my CLU designation. I may complete the two courses for CE purposes to maintain my CFP designation, but not likely to write the comprehensive exam.

My main objection is the fees associated with the CLU. To be frank, I don't think CLU has the "brand equity" as a CFP. Advisors may know what the CLU is, but the general public doesn't By way of example, my wife thought by obtaining the CLU designation, it would then allow me to be an underwriter for an insurance company.

I think CLU fees could be charged to non-Advocis members, but if you are a member of Advocis, then I don't think its fair to charge an additional fee. Unless CLU gets up there as a CFP in terms of public awareness, then I don't think Advocis can justify charging a fee for it.

Gravatar I'm a CFP. And I've thought about pursuing the CLU designation because the wealth transfer and estate planning knowledge is valuable to me and its the area that I want to go. But there are three significant things holding me back:

1. I can't name a single prospect or client that knows or has heard of the CLU designation;
2. The membership requirement in Advocis and the fees are incredibly steep. FPSC's fees for the CFP are reasonable and they are well-marketed, and even CSI doesn't do this to you for their main designations;
3. The CLU's 3 senior courses are, politely, years out of date if the books referenced on the website are accurate. If Advocis/CLU can't take their own course material seriously and update it at least annually then how do they expect members too? This last point was the dealbreaker for me to pursue the CLU.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Gravatar this point it is safe to assume that Liverpool will not be qualifying for next year’s Champions League. It has been clear for a few weeks that they were behind the eight-ball big time, but with the latest draw at the weekend, coupled with City romping again; it looks to likely be over. Spurs beating Arsenal didn’t exactly help either.
